Today’s message is based on insights from John Maxwell’s book, “The 5 Levels of Leadership.” It is a very informative and in-depth look at the different levels leaders fall into, how it impacts their organization, the strengths and the steps one must grow into, to reach the next level.
The most effective leaders, Level 5 Leaders, as Maxwell calls them, are not successful because of their title, power, or position. Instead it is about their willingness to invest in their people, ability to build relationships,
ability to equip, educate and lift up their team, and inspire others to do the same.
True leadership is about helping people develop their own skills to become leaders themselves. Leaders who have the skills, experience, dedication, and willingness to grow and change, can reach the pinnacle of leadership. By doing so, they extend their influence for the benefit of others, creating “leaders” that follow behind. Below are the 5 levels as he outlines them in his book:
1. Position – People follow because they have to.
2. Permission – People follow because they want to.
3. Production – People follow because of what you have done for the organization.
4. People Development – People follow because of what you have done for them personally.
5. Pinnacle – People follow because of who you are and what you represent.
As you can imagine, not all leaders reach the “Pinnacle” level. However, that does not mean they are not effective and valuable at the other levels. It just means they have more to learn, experience, and mature into before.
So I challenge you to look at these levels, and give yourself and “honest” self-assessment on what level you feel you have achieved to date. Wherever that is, I challenge you to speak with those closest to you, current or past team members and ask for honest and transparent feedback. that may not be easy for some of you, but it is invaluable when you do, and the information you glean will be invaluable on your leadership journey.
